5 Senses (Ruth’s SOLS)

Trying to think of a creative way to collect a slice today… Tomorrow I’m giving a minilesson in second grade about adding sensory details to writing, which leads me to collecting my favorite of each sense from today.

I see Stephanie’s new purple glasses.

I hear Hannah’s voice as she sings her latest original song.

I feel Sam’s hand inside of mine as we walk to the car.

I smell Andy’s cologne when he hugs me.

I taste the salty-sweet treat for Dessert Club.

  1. Love the sensory details and the imagery they create. I can also see how this might be a good way to brainstorm slice topics. Each of those details could be part of a larger piece of writing about that topic.

  2. Is is terrible that my first thought was “wonder what dessert was?” 🙂
Thanks for another idea for a way to post when you can’t think of anything.

  3. Hey, I like the salty-sweet desserts, too. Kidding.

I try often to get my students to write vividly and specifically and senses often do that in our writing. I like the listing of sensory experiences you’ve got here–I hope the students can follow your lead and think of some vivid, specific ways to write their own.

P.S. Thanks for your nice comment on my post yesterday–I appreciate it. 🙂 E.

  4. I’m enjoying the sensory details my preschoolers add to their drawings – the hatch marks they make to show something making sound, the dots all around indicating movement. Of course some of the senses are part of the writing experience itself – the marks they have under their noses because they have to smell the marker when they uncap it!
