I woke up at 4:37 a.m. Nope, don’t have to be up yet, I thought. I turned over and attempted to go back to bed. By 4:40 a.m., I realized it wasn’t going to happen. I rolled over, grabbed my iTouch, and started checking my e-mail while still laying in my bed. I realized that laying in bed checking my e-mail wasn’t the most efficient thing to do, so I got up.
I plodded down the hallway to our study where I was able to surf the and started my day by going online to nytimes.com to see what I could read that would interest me. I found a few articles that struck me.
By 5:15 a.m., I was in the shower. Then, I got ready for my day.
My husband woke up at 5:30 a.m., keeping his promise to head to the polls to vote together.
6:00 a.m. came and went. I turned on the news as we got ready for work only to discover that there were long, LONG lines around the East Coast. By 6:30 a.m., I received an e-mail from my mother who had just returned from the polls in NJ. She reported LONG lines. Therefore, it didn’t take LONG for me to tell Marc that I was getting nervous about how LONG the lines at our polling place would be due to the historic nature of this election. Luckily, he agreed to depart from our apartment by 6:40 a.m.
We were the fifth and sixth people on line at our polling place by 6:46 a.m. We reread the questions that were up for a vote here in Rhode Island as we waited patiently along with the small crowd of people who were trickling in on-foot and by car.
The polls opened promptly at 7:00 a.m. Seven minutes later we were out of the building and on our way to start our days. No huge lines where we vote… I’m not sure why I thought they’d be so LONG, but, nonetheless, I did.
I donned and wore my “I voted” sticker proudly today. I feel so fortunate I had the opportunity to vote today. There was something exciting about seeing an African-American man and a woman’s name on the ballot. Today was historic… absolutely, positively historic.
And now, at 10:03 p.m., I wait… wait to find out who will be the next one in charge.
