What really happens to you?

This past March we started the Slice of Life Story Challenge in an effort to help teachers (and kids) preserve little moments of their lives in writing. Most of us, myself included, live extremely ordinary lives. However, there’s something about carving out a slice of one’s day, and writing about it, that can make the ordinary seem extraordinary.

Let me give you just a tiny slice of my day. It’s from a conversation with a parent who attended our class’s Publishing Celebration today.

My child comes home every day and tells me, “You’ll never believe what happened to Ms. S. now!”
“Really?” I asked, astonished.
“Yes. He tells me that you’re always doing something or that something interesting happened to you.”
“Hmmmm… I guess I just tell them a lot about what’s going on with me,” I replied sheepishly.
“No. He really thinks you,” she paused, “experience a lot of things; and he tells us about it,” the mother said honestly.
Inside I thought, Well, I guess that story-telling is powerful. Sharing little slices of my life is helping them realize that you can make more out of something that’s not so big.

One would think I’m a rock star based on this parent’s comments… I’m not! In fact, most days I get up, go to work, eat, and go back to sleep just like everybody else! This is what the Slice of Life Story Challenge is all about! Celebrating and preserving the ordinary moments that often go overlooked in our daily lives.

If you’ve never participated in our weekly Slice of Life Story Challenge, I invite you to start posting your slices next week. Remember, you don’t have to lead an exciting life in a bustling city to have something to write about. As you can see from the slices Ruth and I have written in the past, they’re about everyday things that take place in our lives, which we’re walking through 872 miles apart from each other.

If you have participated in the past, and have taken a break because life has just gotten, well, busy, then on behalf of Ruth and I, I’d like to invite you to come back next Tuesday, 10/28, to share a slice of your life with us.

Hope to see you next Tuesday. 🙂
