My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Fass, was caring and compassionate. She also made learning FUN!
I’ll never forget what she did for us during the December Holidays when I was in fourth grade. She ordered five personalized pencils, complete with our first and last names on each one, for every student in her class. I had never had a pencil with my name on it before. Receiving those pencils from her was, well, nifty!
I find myself personalizing nearly everything for my students now that I’m a teacher. It could be as big as a child’s name tag above his/her coat hook or as small as a laminated bookmark for reference in Reading Workshop (pictured above). I make sure my students’ names go on everything possible. I wonder if it’s because of how special those pencils Mrs. Fass bought me felt at the age of nine…
