Using the rubric I created for the personal narrative unit of study as a skeleton, I created a personal essay rubric a few days ago. I tweaked it with Kate yesterday afternoon and this is what I came up with for my kids. Again, there’s a row so that each student can self-assess their writing at the end of the unit of study, which I found to be helpful for me when I did my assessment since I was able to get a better idea of how each child thought that s/he did in a particular area. (NOTE: My students were pretty honest with their self-assessments. Many times I landed up giving them the same score, in a particular area, as they gave themselves.)

As always, I’d appreciate your feedback if you think there are areas that could be clearer on the rubric.

Dear Stacey,
Thank you for the rubric. I found it to be helpful since all our students have to wrtie personal essays.
