Introductory Post: Practices of Great Writing Teachers Blog Series

Beginning on Sunday, the Two Writing Teachers will be sharing a series of posts that highlight important and effective practices of writing instruction. Because many school districts have new initiatives in place, we’ve seen these practices diminish, and the blog series serves as a reminder of what many of us used to do… and still should!

Our giveaway book is Daily Sparks: 180 Reflections for Teacher Resilienceby Gail Boushey and Carol Moehrle, donated by Stenhouse Publishers (Routledge). I got to talk to them about their book, and I’ll be sharing clips throughout the week, promoting the series. If you comment on any of the posts, you’ll be in the running for one of the three copies we’ll give away. And, if you’re reading this post, you’re probably the type of person who will love this book! It’s a reflection partner with the spotlight on balance, joy, and slowing down to enjoy life. You can watch Gail talk a bit about it below.

Look for a giveaway announcement from Lainie on February 5– and hope it’s you!  Daily Sparks: 180 Reflections for Teacher Resilience is amazing!

Here’s a preview of the posts to come:

  • I’ll start the series on Sunday with a post about the importance of teachers’ own writing lives.
  • Jess Carey continues on Monday with the importance of their professional reading lives.
  • Leah’s Tuesday post is about collaboration when it comes to instruction and assessment.
  • On Wednesday, don’t miss Lainie’s post, remembering and reminding us of all that we can learn when we visit each other’s classrooms.
  • Sarah’s Thursday post recalls the magic of teachers thinking aloud and modeling.
  • The final post of the series is on Friday, and Stacey’s post focuses on the importance of mentor texts.

Our series may feel a little nostalgic to some of you, given the recurring “Remember when?” subheading. We hope that the series also feels empowering and inspirational, as we’ve included research and anecdotes, attesting to and affirming these practices of great writing teachers.
