Build Your Expertise: Have you checked out our winter blog series? Research can be instrumental in supporting instructional decision-making for teachers. This week, we will immerse you in research to build your expertise in various issues surrounding the writing workshop.

Be Inspired: I’ve written about the connection between Impressionism and narrative writing (which makes up much of our slice-of-life writing). In late December, I took my kids to the National Gallery in Washington, DC, which went to when I needed to study for exams as a college student in DC. It hit me again as I meandered through the Impressionist galleries with my children. Impressionism offers valuable lessons for narrative writing.
- Capture fleeting moments and emotions.
- Use vivid language to paint scenes with sensory details.
- Explore subjective perspectives of characters.
- Break traditional storytelling rules and experiment.
- Focus on the present moment for immediacy.
- Allow room for interpretation and engage readers’ imaginations.
Applying one or more of these lessons can make our narrative writing more immersive and engaging. Perhaps these lessons, or the images I’m sharing, will inspire your slice-of-writing today or in March.
For Now: Please share your slice-of-life story below.

I swear that soon (next week?) I’ll write on Monday, not late on Tuesday night. As Stacy said, only three more Tuesdays before March!
Today, I found a poem in a student’s work – and it broke my heart.
