For this post, I have selected a handful of essays from the archives that pertain to risk-taking.
When we teach children to write, we must encourage them to be brave. They should understand that they might make mistakes or feel unsure of themselves along the way–and that this is all totally normal and actually very good!
Writing is hard! It requires a tremendous amount of discipline, focus, stamina, and mental agility. As we teach new skills, strategies, genres, styles, and more, we must keep in mind that new things can be scary at first. However, we can encourage risk-taking in writing workshop by building classroom communities where children feel safe, seen, joyful, and valued, and where taking risks is the rule, not the exception.
