You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So… get on your way! – Dr Seuss
Welcome to day one of the second-ever Classroom Slice of Life Story Challenge. We are delighted you’re here. You are giving your students quite a gift – the opportunity to share their writing with the world and to be part of an online community committed to daily writing for an entire month.
This is post 1 of 31 posts where you will share the permalink to your students’ slice of life stories in the comments section. Please take a few minutes to read through this post prior to sharing.
If your students are slicing from their personal blogs, then you should link their blog posts together using your classroom or personal blog. Then, share the permalink to the location of the “round up” of student slices. (Click here for more information on how to do this.)
Details:
- If you haven’t read the Essential Information post, then please click here to read it now before you post the link to your students’ slice of life stories. Don’t forget to keep your students’ identities anonymous for their protection.
- Only post the link to your students’ slices of life here. Do not post the link to your personal slice of life stories here. Go to Stacey’s daily call for individual slice of life stories to post your personal slice.
- If this is the first comment you’ve left on Two Writing Teachers, then we will have to moderate your comment. We will be checking throughout the day in order to get your links up for the community as soon as possible. As long as you use the same username/email to log in going-forward, your comments should appear instantly in the future.
- Any questions, please contact one of our volunteer concierges. (Click here for more information on how to work with our concierges.) If your last name begins with A-M, contact Linda Baie: LindaB414[at]gmail[dot]com. If your last name begins with N-Z, contact Margaret Simon: margaretsmn[at]gmail[dot]com or her school email: masimon[at]iberia[dot]k12[dot]la[dot]us.
Finally, we invite you to grab the classroom SOLSC button in either English or Spanish and use it on your blog.

How wonderful you are blogging with your son! I am looking forward to reading your Slices. I requested access to your site so that I can view your posts. Is there a way to change your permissions just for the month of March so others can read and comment on your posts? Thanks and happy writing!

Oops! I’m not sure I was clear with my students about leaving a comment on my post with a link to their slice. I only see them once or twice a week, but they are VOLUNTEERING to take up this challenge with me. Anyway, here’s the link, and I hope we get more consistent over the next week. http://kidblog.org/EastCentralWriters/bhillerns/slice-of-life-classroom-challenge-day-one/

How lovely that your students are taking up the challenge on their own! Olivia’s slice about her sister is very sweet. Is there a way you can enable outside comments on your page so that others can leave comments? I know I for one would love to be able to leave encouraging words for your students.

It’s awesome to see so many familiar teacher faces here! I’m having some major wrist problems now and am in a splint. As soon as they resolve, I’ll be checking out your kids’ slices and commenting. (Hoping that’s sooner rather than later!)
Also, WELCOME to the new classrooms!

Great idea to have them tag and then post the link to that!

I’ve found that tagging works better than a link-up since I have comment moderation enabled. Last year I tried having them link-up to a daily post in the comments, but then if they posted after I went to bed, nobody saw their link until I approved it in the morning. This also frees me from posting a link-up post every day, while also teaching them about tags. We’ve done it this way for the past few Tuesdays and it’s worked really well!

My kiddos were tasked with writing every day but we said only 5 have to go on their blog a week since not everyone can blog from home. Still, we have a few posts up already today! Adding the other classes to our blog role. : )

Because this challenge started on a Saturday, we began practicing on Wed. We are third graders and still feeling out what a real slice of life might be. The students will be linking their posts throughout the day. I’m excited about the growth I will see in the next 31 days.
