Living Like a Writer: Someday

Yesterday morning I received a promotional e-mail from The Daily Planner, a company that sells oodles of interesting writerly supplies.  I perused around their site for a few minutes, find an “8 Days a Week” Tear-Off Pad that included space for the seven days of the week + an extra section for someday.  The word someday got me thinking about all of the things that I’d like to do, that aren’t a priority right now (e.g., putting together the three boxes’ worth of furniture that are sitting in my living room, hanging picture frames, unpacking the boxes from my classroom), but need to be someday.  Then, there are places that I would like to visit (e.g., Australia, China, Denmark, Japan, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Tahiti) someday.  My list of someday things that I want to do could go on and on…  This makes me think I need to do more than just listing all of the things I hope and dream to do someday; I should really write about my someday things.

So, as we head off into the weekend, I give you a writerly challenge.  This weekend, instead of listing out all of the things you want to do someday, write about them.  Why are these things important?  What kind of meaning or value do your someday items hold?  In fact, you might want to go a step further by creating a plan of action to make one of your someday items come to fruition.  Regardless of how you choose to write about your someday things, take the time to write about something you plan to do — someday — this weekend.

Enjoy your Saturday and Sunday!

  1. A few years ago i started my summer “to do” list. However, it is not your traditional clean out the closet, organize, make/break doctor appointments. I decided it would be my “to do list for myself”. The first year I had things on my list to do like buy a pair or yellow and orange shoes(yes, I did buy them), go to the art museum and journal–alone, and so on. This year I added things like walk by the lake, read for 3 hours straight, write a letter to myself, have an article published (www.education-world. com) call up and reestablish contact with a friend. At the end of the summer, I feel as if I accomplished something. I date it when I complete the “task”. After all, the closets will always be cluttered and there is always a junk drawer.

  2. There are so many trips on my someday list. Being a teacher limits the wheres and whens of travel. I often thought how lucky the year round schools were because they had a vacation in each season. Some of the trips are related to seasons.Someday I want to visit Holland when the tulips are blooming. (I am half Dutch, so it is my heritage calling me.) I will see the maple trees of Vermont, someday. Christmas markets in Europe need to be explored by me. New Zealand has been whispering in my head, come see me.

I am getting closer to fulfilling some of these trips. I did retire from the classroom, but now I do PD training of teachers. There is more freedom and flexibility with my calendar, but now I must save the money. Spring in Holland? I hope so!

  3. Oh someday. That’s a tricky word isn’t it – it smacks of things that might happen but just as easily might not. What’s the dream of someday versus the vision? I should answer that for myself huh?

  4. This is perfect. Yesterday I was just journaling about what I am doing right now, what I want to do, and prioritizing how to make it all fit. This will be a fun activity to complement my reflections from last night and to look at both short and long term someday ideas. Thanks for the challenge.
