Your post was another reminder that we never know who we’ll touch by the things we do as teachers. When I was in fifth grade, we had an assignment to write a poem that began “Happiness is…” My teacher sent mine in to a student anthology, and I had my first taste of publication. Would I have gone on to be a children’s author without that? I don’t know. Years later, I received a newspaper column in the mail from an old teaching colleague across the county. The aritcle was written by a former fifth-grade student of mine. It was title “Who’s Your Hero?” and she had two — Walt Whitman, and her fifth-grade teacher, Deb Lund. Why me? Because I talught them they were writers. She went on to become a journalist, as did a classmate of hers, who is now an anchor for NBC. It was just a fluke that my friend saw the article and sent it to me. So many times we never get that feedback. Thanks to all of you who are still in the classroom, making a difference, without even knowing how profound that difference can be. You’re the people I’m passionate about supporting. You change the world, one kid at a time.
