Letters to the Next President

FYI: The National Writing Project and Google are sponsoring a letter-writing campaign for high school students to send letters to the presidential candidates. (WHY NOT ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLERS? I wish I knew!) Essentially, the idea is to have kids write letters about issues that are important to them or concerns they have. Here’s the scoop as per the NWP Website:

Letters to the Next President: Writing Our Future is an online writing and publishing project that invites young people to write about the issues and concerns they would want the next president to address and, with the support of their teachers, to publish their writing for a national audience.

  1. Hi,

To answer your question about the age requirements for “Letters to the Next President,” here’s the text from the FAQ page for the project:

Question: Why is this project open only to students 14 and older?
Answer: Letters to the Next President: Writing Our Future is intended for high school students, ages 14–18. We know that young people of all ages want their voices to be heard about the issues that will affect them and their future. We also believe that younger students are fully up to the task of conveying their views in writing and publishing their ideas to public audiences. However, as Letters to the Next President: Writing Our Future requires access to the Internet and a Google Account, it has been designed to comply with Google policies and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Schools that have adopted Google Apps for Education and provided Google Accounts within their domain and with parent permission may be able to include students younger than 14. If this is true for your school, contact letters2president@nwp.org for more information.
