OR
Doesn’t that sound tranquil? Well, it should’ve been, but it sure wasn’t. Therefore, let me re-start my slice with some action!
We pulled into the driveway with the brights of our car still on illuminating the fuzzy black and white creature that was sniffing around the base of the tree at the end of the driveway.
“SKUNK!” I whisper-yelled to Marc, fearing that the skunk would hear me and do something.
“Where?” Marc asked.
“Right there!” I whisper-screamed pointing my finger to the creature that was only a few feet away from our car.
The car was idling as Marc looked at it. I could tell he was pondering what we should do, but I couldn’t wait for an answer. Not when some creature could freak out and spray a horrible odor all over our car… or worse, US!
“What should we do?” I asked as I closed the ignition, leaving the headlights on so that I could watch our little ‘friend.’
“We- should-,” he paused.
“We should make a run for it!” I exclaimed watching our stinky friend putter farther away from the car into a neighbor’s house.
“Okay.”
“Do you have the keys handy?” I asked Marc.
I heard a jingle in his pocket and saw him shake his head.
I continued to watch the skunk as it skulked away, farther and farther from us.
“I think we can go now,” Marc said gently.
“But what if…” I paused. I was thinking dramatically, “What if it comes back and sprays us? Then what? Do you know how bad that will be.”
My husband, the ever-calm one said, “It won’t be good. Are you ready?”
I shut off the lights and said, “Yes. Let’s go!”
With that we opened the car doors gently, but with super-speed, gathered our belongings form the back seat, closed the doors with a quick burst and scurried towards the front door.
“Wait!” I whisper-yelled again. “I left the doors unlocked!”
“Stace!” Marc said urgently, “Don’t go back!”
I had to go back. I’m from New York. You always locks your car doors!
A few steps on the blacktop towards the car, I flung the door open, hit the button and slammed it shut, and moved as fast as I could towards the front door.
“Did you think the skunk was going to break into the car?” Marc chuckled.
“Just open the door before we get sprayed!” I pleaded.
“You could’ve gotten sprayed!” Marc whispered loudly.
“C’mon, let’s get inside!” I said as the key clicked in the lock.
We entered the house and slammed the door shut behind us. We were breathing loudly. Then, we started laughing.
“We almost got skunked!” I said giggling.
“YOU almost got it… you went back to lock the doors!” Marc said knowingly.
I laughed. I had nothing to defend myself with. He was right. I put myself in skunk’s-way and could’ve gotten a not-so-lovely spray of perfume. I cringe just thinking about it.

My parents have a security light in front of their house. Bugs would congregate under the light in the summer evenings much to the delight of the neighborhood skunk. I remember watching very carefully when I would pull in after dark!
I enjoyed your “Slice of Life” story this week. =)

Great story, Stacey … glad you didn’t get skunked! And glad you were able to protect the car from skunk thieves!
