One of my students e-mailed me a few hours ago asking me if I read a piece of her writing that she gave to me (to read) on Thursday. I read it and was moved for two reasons. #1. She reacted to the world (i.e., the news and a conversation she had with her mom about the immigration legislation in this country). #2. She took a stance on the issue of immigration reform and in the end the three pages she gave me, stated that she wants to take some action.
Wow!
I think I feel an independent writing project coming on for her… She needs to have her voice heard on this hot-button issue. She’s nine years old, but has strong opinions that need to be heard.

Some of our students have experience far beyond their years and it gives their young writing such a strong voice! I bet she never forgets the independent time to develop her ideas on this issue!
