It’s the 30th day of the 15th Annual Slice of Life Story Challenge!

Today’s inspiration comes to us from Fran Haley, who blogs at Lit Bits and Pieces. In her post, “Only One,” Fran tells the story of a beloved annual ritual at her home: the finches who nest in the wreath on her front door year after year in March.

The way Fran describes the father finches feels like a metaphor for slicers and the Slice of Life Story Challenge:

“The birds are a marvel; their songs are a marvel. They lift my spirits immeasurably. Every nest is different; this one has lovely down and fiber running through it. So soft. Last year’s was very green. One nest in years past was trimmed in tiny flowers. Finch dads are mixed media artisans; they collect the materials. This papa seems especially considerate and nurturing.”

Fran’s post and this metaphor resonate with me today, on this second to last day of the challenge. I am so grateful to be part of this community, writing beside you all. Thank you for being here and sharing your stories!

  3. I am forever inspired by the refugee women with whom I work. They’ve overcome challenges, at times life threatening, I couldn’t begin to imagine. As I teach them English, I’m terribly elated by what in turn, inspires them. This is Fatma. Today’s haiku celebrates her bravery and enthusiasm as she determined after I read her, “Snowy Day,” by Ezra Jack Keats that she wanted to ice skate. And ice skate she did. I’m so proud of her.   196. Full confession here, this year’s challenge has been a grind for me. I haven’t gotten to nearly as many of your blogs as I’d hoped and know I’m missing out on reading a lot of amazing writing, but I’m so grateful to you all for cresting the same waves. Zero chance I would have risen to the challenge without the shared effort, so much appreciation to y’all (yes, I know there’s one more day but wanted to catch everybody)!
