  1. I tried an “Isolation Journals” prompt, to write without emotion about 5 words chosen from a list. My words were watermelon, earthworm, tin can, buttercup and dandelion. They brought out some long ago summer memories.

  2. The line “I’m the one who leaps” from Jericho Brown’s Pulitzer Prize winning poetry collection, The Tradition, reminded me of a life-changing story I heard long ago. I lifted that line for my own poem along with anaphora, the repetition of it for emotional pull into the experience (thank you Margaret Simon and Ethical ELA for the inspiration):
