New Blog Series: Beyond the Fundamentals of Writing Workshop

Feb 2018 Blog Series - DRAFTLast August, our co-author team created a blog series we affectionately thought of as Writing Workshop: 101 to help people who were getting started with writing workshop. This week, we’ll dive deeper into the topics we explored during the Writing Workshop Fundamentals Blog Series in August 2017. This week we’re moving beyond the fundamentals for those who are ready to dig deeper into their writing instruction. This series is for experienced workshop teachers who wish to push the limits on traditional teacher/student parameters so that their writing workshops will become more student-centered.

Here’s a preview of what’s to come this week:

  • Later today, Beth Moore will talk about next level unit planning to help you differentiate your curriculum and help your students understand the transference between writing and other subject areas.
  • Tomorrow, Deb Frazier will help you think of ways to involve your students in the classroom environment.
  • On Wednesday, I’ll talk about infusing inquiry minilessons into your repertoire.
  • On Thursday, Lanny Ball will help you take your conferring to the next level.
  • On Friday, Betsy Hubbard will discuss student-led and self-selected small group work.
  • On Saturday, Kathleen Neagle Sokolowski will talk about student-written mentor texts so all students’ voices are honored.
  • Finally, on Sunday, Melanie Meehan will discuss volume and stamina so that you can envision new ways to have your students use independent writing time. 

On Monday, February 12th at 8:30 p.m. EST, we’ll host a Twitter Chat about this blog series. Please join us so we can move beyond the fundamentals and outgrow our thinking together.

  27. This week’s lineup looks amazing. I feel like writing always gets the smallest focus in our literacy PD. This will help move me and my students toward more successful and productive writing time.
