Slice of Life Story Challenge

DAY 5 OF THE MARCH SOLSC! #SOL17

slice of life_individualWelcome to the fifth day of the 10th Annual Slice of Life Story Challenge! Today is the final day to join to month-long challenge and still be eligible for a prize. Click here for more information about starting late.

If you’re participating in the individual Slice of Life Story Challenge, this is where you share your writing.  If you’re sharing your students’ slice of life stories, then head over to the Classroom Challenge, which Beth, Deb, Kathleen, and Lanny are hosting this month.  (Please see Deb’s previous post.)

A special welcome to the first-time Slicers who are joining us this year.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

While we hope to help everyone who takes the SOLSC to become a more confident writer, visiting and commenting on each other’s blogs is at the heart of our community. Please take a moment to watch the video (above), which includes some announcements about commenting as part of the SOLSC. Also, check out Fran’s post, “Going Public,” about the importance of commenting.

BADGE

As part of our 10th year of slicing, we’re releasing badges for our community members throughout the month. Today, I’m pleased to share the NEW SLICER badge with you. If this is your first month-long challenge, feel free to right-click on the image, save it to your computer, and display it on the blog you are using for the SOLSC.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

Username:

Please use the SAME email/username information on all of your March comments.

Commenting:

  • Please include the permalink (aka: unique URL) to your post when you leave a comment. Click here and scroll to the “New to Slicing” section of the blog post. Once you arrive, you’ll find two visuals that illustrate an example and a non-example of a permalink.
    • If you link your slice of life story incorrectly today, you’ll receive a reply to your comment from Beth Moore, who is handling tech support this year, or one of the other co-authors.
  • We worked together to create some comment guidelines. We may, at any time, remove a comment from our blog if it is inappropriate. Please refer to these guidelines when commenting this month:
    • Self-Promotion: Please don’t use your comment or link to your blog for self-promotion. The links in the comment section of our Slice of Life Story Challenge are meant to lead our readers to stories from people’s lives–not just whatever was on your blog that day.
    • Linking and Running: Please do not just drop off the link to your Slice without commenting on at least three other Slice of Life Stories. Comments are the foundation of this community. If you choose to link early in the morning, please return later that day to leave at least three comments.
    • Spam: It’s not just big advertisers who spam. Spam can include: Copying and pasting a comment from one post to another, or leaving a message such as, “Nice post. Visit my blog at…” This kind of comment is a form of spam.  We reserve the right to delete comments that fall into this category.

Thank you for appreciating and standing by our guidelines.

  • If you’ve never posted a comment on TWT before, or if your comment contains more than one hyperlink, then your comment will be held for moderation. The co-author team and I will monitor blog comments a few times today so we can approve comments that don’t post automatically. Therefore, there is no need to submit your comment multiple times if it doesn’t appear after you click “post comment.”
    • If you use the same username/email to log in when you leave your comment, your comments should appear instantly in the future.
    • Tech-related questions? Contact Beth Moore at beth[at]elizabethmoore[dot]work.
  • If this is the first time you’re participating in the Slice of Life Story Challenge, please let us know that when you share your link as a comment.
  • If you have a Blogger blog, please make sure you’re using the “No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA” option or removing the security layers to make it easier for people to leave comments on your blog posts.  Click here for more information about “No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA.”

    1. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree! It seems that you two have many things in common, but one thing is your commitment. To life, to reading, to books, to helping others….you are strong people who symbolically believe that everything can be fixed. Nothing should be left behind or forgotten, not even books.

    1. Carbs are not the enemy! I recomend reading “Eat Right for Your Blood Type” or “The Whole 30”. Carbs are crucial to some people, it’s just about finding those quality carbs. I suggest experimenting and finding what works for your own body. No one diet works for everyone, and diets and fasts are not long term plans. Take a look into your nutrition and use this fast as a way to raise your own awareness of your body and what it needs, don’t lose hope!

    1. I just downloaded the app! That would be great for me…I get distracted by other things I see need to get done and it is hours before I leave for home. I would love to download this on an iPad and see if it would help my students who are easily distracted complete tasks…thanks for sharing this delicious nugget…

      1. I can see a few uses for this: during my plan times (especially the short ones,) during a minilesson (connect, teaching point, active engagement, link!!)

    1. Wow!!! That was powerful! I love the exercise to evaluate the depth of knowledge for ALL the kids in my classroom. I definitely will try the 3 words writing strategy with my class. I have used the 3-words strategy to create a video for special occasions, like what something means to our class, but not as a writing strategy to hear individual student voice…thanks for sharing.
