BE INSPIRED:

Sharon Peters (@speters5) is a new Slicer who has joined our writing community from Kuala Lampur. (Her students are also part of the Classroom Challenge!) She’s a talented writer who made my heart race as I read her slice, “Intruders,” last weekend. She crafted a story about an incident with a male macaque that unfolded bit-by-bit and made you feel like you were right there. (Plus, she posted a video that helped to create even more story tension.)

If you’re looking for some inspiration about making your readers feel like they’re right there alongside you, then read “Intruders.” (BTW: I have a feeling you’ll want to know what happened to the beagle by the end of her slice. Be sure to read the comments for the answer!)

  137. Johnny Cash used mentor texts, notebooks, and used every tool we know of good writers. Yet, a recent biographer mistakenly notes that one of his songs wasn’t written after Cash was profoundly affected by a film. He suggests it was written much later…dismissing all of the thinking, talking, and drafting that occurred.

    Sometimes we miss the point that writing is thinking…and thinking and sketching and conversation count as writing.

  206. I am an interested lurker on this site. I hope to be a participant eventually. Just so you all know that people like me who tune in and read, but don’t often comment, still take away good thinking. It changes our learning and teaching, and I guess that really IS participation…sort of.
