This summer seems to be the summer of Slicer meet-ups! It started in June and continued this month when I noticed Julie Johnson and Amy Rudd met-up in Ohio.
Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Tara Smith, from A Teaching Life, in-person. We’ve been reading each other’s writing for the past three years, but we had never met until the two of us found ourselves at Teachers College for the August Writing Institute. Tara is as brilliant, genuine, and inspiring in real life as she is in her writing. Not only did we have lunch on Wednesday, but we met up again on Thursday. (Unfortunately, Bonnie was unable to join us on Thursday. I’ll look forward to seeing her again at NCTE in Boston.) What a delight it was to connect with a like-minded educator who I felt as though I had known from years because of the way she’s honestly shared stories about her children, her classroom, and the teachers she has mentored along the way.
This week, would you take a moment to leave a comment on at least one person’s writing you haven’t commented on before? Perhaps it will be the first step to meeting a new friend and kindred spirit.
A bit late – but I wanted to share a Slice of Life

I can’t find a way to respond on your site? I love the idea of describing the physical chair as you prepare to be the Chair of your department. Just as someone who works I’d have to say the best approach is to ask them what they expect from you. As a chair is your responsibility to lead and support or dictate? If it is lead and support then you have to know how they will best feel supported. 🙂
