  1. My slice is about my little lights that will be going to first grade with me this year. AND….don’t forget Chalkabration is coming soon, July 31st, save the date!

  2. Hello everybody.
I didn’t write about my OWL this week either. Something else more significant came up and, anyway, I don’t think I chose a word this year. January came and went too fast! However, this reflection might help me select a word mid-year that might still be of use for me. It’s about some evaluations of a workshop I recently gave.
    Regards!

  4. My eyes open very very slowly and my arm reaches out for my phone to check the time. It’s 6:10… I get up to use the bathroom and rush quickly back in bed. I think to myself “I can close my eyes for a few more minutes before I have to get up. As soon as I hit my warm, comfy, king size bed, my body balls up with relief…. few more minutes!!! I tuck my face in the comforter to get away from the cold air conditioned filling the bedroom. Liberty, my dog, decides to slowly get up and drag herself right next to me, placing her chin on my arm while my boyfriend’s long skinny leg is thrown across my legs. I thought to myself…. with a only a few minutes left to be able to keep my eyes closed, I am being used as personal pillows for both my dog and boyfriend. With only being 5’2” 1/2 (can’t forget the 1/2 inch) and sleeping on a king size bed, you would think I’d have some room all too myself. But NOOOO….. I’m usually always on the edge of the bed being slept on. The worst part about it is that my dog never has to get up early to do anything. She’ll slept cuddled up on you until you are ready to start the day. I hope my children are sleepy heads too but now I think I’m asking for too much!! And my boyfriend is off today.
After squeezing in a few minutes of slowly pushing off my boyfriend and dog, I finally get up. I’m more tired than I was when I initially got up!! I start my morning routine. As I’m finishing up getting dressed and thinking about all the experiences I will have today at the HVWP, I glanced over to see my boyfriend and dog and they are both cuddled up.. sound asleep. I call Liberty to get up and go out for bathroom time and she looks at me with a blank face. She didn’t move a muscle and I think… Man, she’s got it good!! What it would be to be Liberty… a dog with much love, attention, and lots of treats.

  5. I’m still glowing, with music playing in my ears, from the Natalie Merchant concert I went to a few days ago at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. http://www.bethelwoodscenter.org/ Wow – what a voice and what an adventure! The music was rich, powerful and beautiful. It was a treat to have a grand piano and a harp as part of the orchestra, too. The Hudson Valley Philharmonic made a great sound accompanying Natalie for the first half and some of the second half of the concert before they left the stage. Natalie sung many new songs but she knew we were all waiting for our old favorites! She joked with us about keeping us hanging until the last half hour of the concert to hear them! When the orchestra left the stage we nearly left because it was getting very late and we’re usually in bed by 10! I’m glad we stayed, though because Natalie changed her style to be even more lively and playful. The last 30-45 minutes was like a different concert. She sang many favorites accompanied by piano, electric guitar, double bass and a young vocalist with a voice like an angel. What was her name? Natalie joked with the audience, teasing the dancing crowd near the stage about wasting their time taking movies with their iPhones and iPads . . . “No one’s going to care about your old movies after your dead,” she joked, and the audience roared! “I’m grateful you came to hear my concert; I’m sure you all had many other options.” Bravo, Natalie. I had the time of my life. When we got home it was 1 in the morning – we got home after our 19 year old daughter was asleep. That’s got to be a first!

  6. A little late, by minutes, I headed out along my usual route to the Hudson Valley Writing Project’s Summer Institute, held at SUNY New Paltz. Rain droplets spotted my windshield as I patiently trailed an SUV that seemed to be traveling at a rate far below the actual limit, or though it seemed. As we inched along route 207, this liesurely pace seemed to juxtapose with the interval of beats playing in the music on my radio. My thoughts trailed off while my attention remained very much on the road. I thought about the phone call from my doctor yesterday regarding my test results. I wonder if she will have any further information for me today…

  7. Last week, the trunk of the car hit my head and caused me to have a mild concussion. As a result, I’m supposed to be on brain (cognitive) rest. In an effort to stay off of the computer today, I’m not composing a new slice. I’m linking to one I wrote last week about something very special that happened around here that warmed my heart.

    “Mommy”

Once I’m able to sit at a computer for more than 10 minutes without getting a headache, I’ll be back to slicing and commenting. (I spoke with Franki Sibberson yesterday in light of her recent concussion, which she also blogged about over at the Nerdy Book Club. She urged me to really do nothing in order to get better. I’m taking her advice since I’m starting to improve.) Until then, I wish everyone a wonderful week!

      1. Thank you.
My computer just died so I’m left with my iPhone and iPad, which I can’t spend much time on because of my headache. I guess this is G-d’s way of making sure I get well (& stay off of the computer)!

        1. Maybe, I had a need to leave work became ill trying to be strong enough to stay, then I went part-time and eventually I chose the exit – I am sure it was meant to be – ‘hobson’s choice’ or a plan!
