On the final day of the March SOLSC, Amy Rudd crafted a parody of Barry Manilow’s “I Write the Songs.” (Click here if you are unfamiliar with the song.) She changed it to “I Wrote the Slices.” I’ll be honest. I’ve been a Manilow fan ever since I found his records in my parents’ house. I’ve even seen him in concert! Therefore, I LOVED Amy’s homage to Manilow on the final day of the month-long challenge. Therefore, on this final day of April, I wanted to share Amy’s piece with you.
“I Wrote the Slices!” a parody on “I Write the Songs”
Seems like I’ve been slicing forever…
since I wrote my very first slice
I put the words and the sentences together
I’m a slicer and I wrote the posts…
I wrote the slices I wish the world would read
I wrote the slices of life
they’re special things
I wrote the slices that may make you sigh
I wrote the posts, I sure did try!
A slice may weigh deep in your mind
My blog’s a place, it’s from my soul
And when I read the comments you’ve left here for me
I’m happy and I feel like they are gold…
I wrote the slices I wish the world would read
I wrote the slices of life
they’re special things
I wrote the slices that may make you sigh
I wrote the posts I sure did try!
Oh the slices make me dance
My writer’s spirit takes a chance
And wrote these slices of life to perfect my craft!
Writing fills my heart
Two writing teachers is where you start
They’re for me, they’re for you
They’re for you, they’re for me
It’s a Slice of Life Community!
We wrote the slices we wish the world would read
We wrote the slices of life
they’re special things
We wrote the slices that may make you sigh
We wrote the posts We sure did try!
We wrote the slices we hope the world will read
We wrote the slices of my life
they’re special things
We wrote the slices that may make you sigh
We wrote the posts we sure did try!
We’re slicers and we made it through!
–Amy Rudd
Finally, I won’t be slicing this week since it’s Screen Free Week. While I cannot go completely screen-free this week, I’ve elected to cut back on anything non-essential for consulting. Therefore, I’m only going to be checking e-mail three times daily and won’t be blogging this week. (All of my posts were pre-set to go live in advance of Screen Free Week.) So, I’ll see everyone next week.
I am a literacy consultant who focuses on writing workshop. I've been working with K-6 teachers and students since 2009. Prior to that, I was a fourth and fifth-grade teacher in New York City and Rhode Island.
I'm the author of Craft Moves (Stenhouse Publishers, 2016) and the co-author of Jump Into Writing (Zaner-Bloser, 2021), Welcome to Writing Workshop (Stenhouse Publishers, 2019), and Day By Day (Stenhouse, 2010).
I live in Central Pennsylvania with my husband and children. In my free time, I enjoy swimming, doing Pilates, cooking, baking, making ice cream, and reading novels.

I can’t believe I didn’t write last Tuesday (well, I wrote, but didn’t post!)…Today celebrates my 113 day in a row blogging…I look forward to more days, more writing, more reading…
Any children’s book lovers out there?!?!? I am finalizing my list for summer book clubs, and wondering how my list looks, and if I am missing anything, or including anything that could be better!? Do you have a second to look?! You might even learn about a new book that YOU should check out!! http://jenbaum-laughoftenlovemuch.blogspot.com/2013/04/summer-book-club-books.html
The first time I read the poem, I didn’t pick up the Manilow. Then I read the comments and had to go back to try to sing it. I must say I had several Barry albums. :o) Love it, Amy.
Today I’m joining Betsy’s #chalkabration on this last day of National Poetry Month. I’ve been writing for 61 days straight (slice and poems). I’m looking forward to being able to let writing percolate a little before posting.
This community is a welcome relief after anothe very frustrating day of testing:
I’m taking part in the weekly Slice of Life Challenge sponsored by Ruth and Stacey over at Two Writing Teachers, where teachers write and share each Tuesday. Join in yourself or head over to check out what’s happening with other slicers. If you’re taking part in the SOL, leave a link to your post. I’d love to read it.
I’ve missed writing my slices! I was inspired to do so by the poem/song. Even though I really don’t have the time, I carved out a little bit to write about something that has been bothering me.
I like how some of our “greatest hits” about writing from the March writing challenge are being replayed.
This a faith poem which resulted from watching the news and trying to understand what is incomprehensible.
Do you feel like you are living in a desert? I often feel that way, but I was reminded to bloom where I am planted when a sunflower seed germinated in my bathroom sink.
Thanks Stacy for reminding us about Amy’s slice and it is a reprieve from the testing heaven many of us are in. My slice is about one of my favorite songs from childhood. xo
Very glad that I read this after sleeping as I’m not sure I could have fallen to sleep thinking about Barry Manilow–I don’t need the words for that one! Great poem, Amy.
Love the poem Amy, and rereading it this morning makes me glad I have not totally unplugged even though I am trying to think about and live life away from the computer screen this week! http://drferreri.blogspot.com/2013/04/unplugged-and-read.html
I used to be embarrassed to like Barry Manilow. LOL. I haven’t thought of Barry in years. Now I will be singing his song all day–great!
Comparison can be the source of unhappiness. Sometimes it’s difficult to break free of it.
Thanks for indulging in a Manilow moment with me fellow slicers! We do write great slices for the world to read during the SOLC in March and on Tuesdays all year…Thanks to Stacey and Ruth for hosting these moments of bonding as a writing community!
wonderful poem, Amy! Now, like Tara, I will go to bed with ‘I write the slices’ in my head! Today, it’s the end of poetry month, time for Betsy’s Chalkabration & May Day in Denver means “snow”! Yes, it’s happening again! But I wrote about a spring thing-I’m determined! http://teacherdance.blogspot.com/2013/04/its-time-for-slice-of-life-tuesday.html
