Mid-way through the March Challenge I came across a poem Betsy wrote on Teaching Young Writers. It is entitled “Why I Write.” There are so many reasons each of us choose to write and to come back and share our writing with this community each Tuesday year-round. When you leave the link to your slice of life story today, consider answering the following question: Why do you write?
I write for myself
so I can express something
relive something
release something.
I write to hear my voice
to feel my words
to value myself.
I write to inspire
to awaken
to see
to reflect.
I write
for me.

I write to try to make sense of our hectic and raw chaos that is our life. It is a fun way to preserve moments we
Swear we will always remember, but they slip away if they don’t get
Recorded. It helps me better know myself and prioritize what is most important to our family.
I started as a commitment and I am continuing as a way to express myself…I am addicted to reading blogs and writing posts…even math geeks like me can find immense solace in writing!
Today, I write to document travel and life experiences, and apparently, to keep myself awake and entertain myself in an exhausted state, as I must have down for a good portion of my 28-hour plane ride last week! 🙂 I will be posting the Australian Adventures over the course of the next week, as I edit photos and write to go with them. 🙂 http://jenbaum-laughoftenlovemuch.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-plane-ride.html
Both Flannery O’Connor and Joan Didion got there before me: I write to know what I’m thinking. Writing has given me so much, introduced me to so many people. Today is my beloved niece’s birthday, so today I write for her: http://girlgriot.wordpress.com/2013/04/09/birthday-arun-9/
I write to encourage myself to write more. I write so I can see what I’m thinking. I write because if you talk to yourself, people look at you funny. I write to vent, to exhault, to remember.
I write because it gives me the opportunity to use my imagination and share my thoughts, dreams, and life with others. It is definitely therapeutic……:-)
I write to get it down. I see things now – differently – and I need to record it. How I feel about it, how I see it, what I think about it, what happens next. All of it.
I write so that I can teach others to write. Here is a post I wrote about an article in the newspaper on the need for grammar and cursive writing in our schools.
I write because it helps me think through and deal with life situations. Today a student asked if I just get inspired to write all the time at home. He said something like, “You know…You’re putting on your shoes or something, and all of a sudden, you say, ‘I think I’ll go write a poem.'” The talk was that I must just sit around the house each day, writing, writing, writing. It was funny, but you had to be there! I got to explain that writing is HARD WORK!!! But…oh, so worth it when you can express yourself… and like anything WORTH anything, you have to MAKE yourself write many times!
Tonight I wrote a BALLAD to my dear children… http://skunkle.blogspot.com/2013/04/my-ballad-my-dear-children.html
I’m with Tami above. I write because I love it.. experimenting.. communicating. Writing helps me understand the world and myself. Writing is one of the few areas of life where I feel I have come close to having the skiil and ability to organize, compose, and implement. Oh.. and it’s fun. I should mention that. 🙂
I write because I can’t always talk.
I write because blank pieces of paper call my name, softly.
I write because words are like building blocks in my playroom.
I write because . . . because I can’t imagine not.
I almost forgot…Betsy’s poem is awesome. I was happy to see it in your post today Stacey. When I originally read it, it inspired me to write my own poem about why I write. There are so many reasons! I posted it in March if anyone wants to read it again.
I write because I feel it’s the one thing that is mine, and the one thing I’m pretty good (not great) at. Is that bad? I know I should have a deeper and more meaningful reason, but I don’t. I just write because… I can.
I write for so many different reasons! Sometimes, I write just because I feel I have to write. Other times, it’s to get that satisfying feeling of being done writing. Other times, it’s to share with others. I loved the poem shared today!
I’ve always had a blog incorporated into the website for the writing community I run, but I’ve really struggled to find my voice and purpose there. Slicing last month helped me do that. I think I’ve found a balance between professional and personal writing now, and I’m enjoying it so much. MY SOL is a reflection of how I hope to challenge the writers I work with to consider purpose too. http://www.wnyyws.org/blog/2013/04/multiple-choices/
I write because it helps me process what I see and what I feel – and because it’s in me and it wants to be told.
Here’s a little slice about the change of seasons:
I write because I like to. I write because I have something to say, something to share. I write because it makes me feel better. I write because it is sometimes too difficult to say.
I write to encourage and bring laughter.
Today’s post is an interview with Steven Pressfield, the bestselling author of The War of Art, about his book Turning Pro. There is a book giveaway for people who comment and share the article.
Thanks you for posting my poem Stacey. I remember how I was feeling when I wrote that and reading it today reminded me why I write. I happen to end up getting sick and staying home from school today unsure of whether I’d be able to slice. Then I decided to pick up some colored pencils and write a poem. It was the right medicine to lift my spirits a bit. http://teachingyoungwriters.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-summer-dream.html
Hmm. I write for lots of different reasons. To capture experiences. To think. When I can’t think. To figure out what I know. To try and sort through what I don’t know. To learn. To connect with other people. To vent. Sometimes, if you read my post from today, it becomes a bit of a problem. http://carolwscorner.blogspot.com/2013/04/slice-of-life-poetry-curse_9.html
I write because I can’t not write. Because words mesmerize me. Because I like to watch gerunds jump and verbs reverberate. So even when I write about the minutiae that comprises my life, I try to do so with verve and panache.
I write to push myself as a teacher. When I put myself in my kiddos shoes, I tend to appreciate their hard work more. When I’m tired and just want to put a star on their paper, I’m reminded of how powerful and important quality comments are. Writing helps me be a better teacher and gives me the push to document my life. Thank you for giving me this outlet to get my thoughts down and share them with others.
I write to find myself, to understand what I believe, to soften my harsh edges, to vent, to love, to play, to discover, to nurture, to connect, and to grow. I write to become a better teacher. I write to give myself a chance to catch up with and control my meandering thoughts. What a great question…I may have to write/slice about this soon.
I write because I teach writing and need to keep a practice going to share in the daily struggles of my students. I write in order to know what I think and what I feel. I write to connect. I write to share.
This week, I wrote about a student who found his way. I feel blessed to be a teacher today.
I write to remember, to savor the details, to leave something behind. I write to reflect, change, grow. I write for me. And I write for others. I write to discover.
I write to clear my head. I write because the story, poem, letter, words need to be written. I write to heal. I write to experience every human emotion that is possible while my words are flowing. Plus, it’s way cheaper than therapy. 😉
Today I write about crossing to the other side in my classroom and with my colleagues.
I write to capture moments in time, to process my thinking, to reflect on my life, to remember events, to practice what I preach! Without this community, I would still be planning to write someday. Because of this community, I can proudly proclaim that I am a writer.
Reasons to write have changed over time. Now I write because it’s fun to record moments of time that would have slipped away from my memory. Today is such an example.
As a teacher of writing, as I notice my life, in all of its richness and all of its power, in its suffering and its celebration–holding it in non-judgment–in an act of noticing…I can then be a conduit to allow others to take on this tool as well.
I write to think. To process … to share… Today’s post was inspired by a video that expressed the poetry and beauty of math (and my frustrations with state testing.)
Today, I am writing to process something that happened to me this weekend. It’s a long story but worth it. Have you ever met a homeless person? Have you ever reached out and helped? Now, I have. I learned a powerful lesson in the process. http://reflectionsontheteche.wordpress.com/2013/04/09/homeless/
I write to help me become more aware of what is happening around me and to share memories of the past. Today’s slice is about two very special people in my life – my Mom & Dad.
I can’t write about writing without adding the word, digital to the concept.. digital writing has transformed me. I am writing and making meaning getting messy with digital media. I just returned from a family wedding after sharing a new video. For me it was so much more than a slide show…
I’m including it in my Slice for this week.
I write to catch the words I sometimes hear, floating in the air, sometimes its words fluttering by me. Sometimes its words drifting through my inner ear.
I write because I love it! I am loving it even more as I experiment with new genres. Last week I wrote a personal creative nonfiction piece. It was so fun to find a new medium that I actually really love. My SOL today is that creative nonfiction piece: http://smilingallthewhile.blogspot.com/2013/04/i-scream-you-scream.html

I write to “remember” and to “unpack” or attempt to clarify my professional (and at times my personal) lives. I’m planning at some point to try to separate them into 2 blogs; however, they keep intersecting!

I write to make sense of things–to help me figure stuff out. For example, how are writing workshop, flipped instruction, and STEM connected?

I write to make sense of the world around me. I also wrote to help me hold onto the bits of life that I want to remember forever.
I’m combining speech and reading work in some of my daughter’s favorite books.
