Raising a Literate Human

I promised myself I would share the new blog I’ve been working on once I reached 20 posts.  That promise was made in late February.  Life got pretty busy between February and June.  Therefore, I just reached my 20 post milestone last night.  Hence, here I am, proud to announce an additional address I have in the blogosphere: Raising a Literate Human (

I started Raising a Literate Human to reflect on the act of reading the word and reading the world.  I needed a place to share popular and journal articles I was reading — about reading — with other people.  I also wanted a place where I could share books with other people who have children (or nieces/nephews/cousins/grandchildren) around the same age as my own.  However, I really started another blog so I could share my love of raising a literate human with other like-minded people.

Many thanks to Cindy Minnich for giving me the push I needed to get Raising a Literate Human off of the ground.  Cindy was willing to bounce ideas back and forth with me and read some of my earliest posts to help me figure out what I really wanted the blog to be.  (With her help, I realized it was partially about research and partially about observations of my daughter and the world we inhabit.)

If you follow me on Twitter, then you might’ve noticed my user name, @raisealithuman, doesn’t have my real name in it.  If you’d like to know the back story on how that name (and subsequently the name of the blog) came to be, then please click here.

I hope you’ll come over and visit Raising a Literate Human in the days and weeks to come.  I won’t be blogging daily, but I’,m hoping to get to 40 posts a lot faster than I got to 20!

  1. Love this site and the new blog. I’m not a parent yet, but I am an elementary school librarian working with kids as young as four, so I think Raising a Literate Human can definitely apply to my teaching. And of course I shared the link with all my Facebook and Pinterest friends since so many of them have and/or teach young kids. 🙂 Bravo to you!

  2. The title says so much about the blog. I like the title and the idea for the blog. You impress me how in your busy life you always find time to reflect and record, and through that you help others to think and grow. Happy Writing!

  3. I love your idea, Stacey, & just wrote my connections with what Ingrid experiences now because of those around her connected to school and my own teaching experiences in literacy. I’ll be so interested in what you share with us on this blog! Congratulations!
